I have Windows XP on a 160gb NTFS drive all to itself... I want to split the drive into 2 80gb partitions but i do not want to lose my xp installation.... I dont really mind if XP is lost because i can restore a backup later but is there a free partition manager i could use as this is only a once off scenario and i dont want to buy partition magic or other software like that etc.
Thanks in advance...

Partition manager ??????
This is able to shrink, but it has some limitations, so if it doesn't do anything on the first attempt, try entering a bigger size for the original partition until it works.

I had the same problem when I tried it. I then ran chkdsk /f from the command line and I had several disc errors. Once I cleaned those up, it ran just fine.
